Requirements for “SOEST-Level” Web Pages

[ Web Site Policies Page: Basic PoliciesWeb Contacts | Basic Guidelines | “Top Level” Requirements ]

Front Page

The Home page is the entry site or portal to the SOEST web presence. Its purpose is to set the tone and present an interface the viewer may use to search the SOEST site.

The top of the page will highlight one of the many pages that make up the SOEST web site, or will have an item of news that is considered especially noteworthy. You are invited to make your case, but please remember that the decision rests with the folks in Publication Services (email us at illust@soest.hawaii.edu, or call us at 808.956.7079) and the Outreach Coordinator (see below).

The “SOEST in the News” section will highlight and link to, typically, an item or two from the popular or specialty press covering a SOEST person, unit, or event. It might also highlight a press release that, while particularly noteworthy, had not made it into the popular press. Although these links will usually come from the Outreach Specialist, faculty, students, and staff are encouraged to contact the us and the outreach offices with news.

News Page

These pages highlight and link to five or six items in the the press covering a person or unit of SOEST, or an event at the school of interest to the community. The page also links to the Press Release page, which has five or six press releases that may or may had not have made it into the popular press.

Although these links come from Outreach Specialist, faculty, students, and staff are again encouraged to contact the outreach office with news. If you have news to share, please contact

Departments Page

This page contains links to the four academic departments, and that is all. Unless you are a new department, you page will not be linked from here. Sorry…

Education Page

This page provides information and resources for students: applying, new, and continuing, both undergraduate and graduate. For more information, please contact:

Research at the School Page

This section is the portal to the SOEST research institutes and major research groups. Links are restricted to designated administrative groups in the School’s organizational flow chart and a few other major programs.

This page also has a set of links to the departmental research pages (or the equivalent).

Also linked from this page is the Other Research Units, and Laboratories and Other Facilities page. This page highlights and links to other research projects, and to laboratories and facilities. To be included and linked to this page an individual or group must be engaged in an ongoing, funded research project at SOEST or one of its constituent departments, institutes, programs, etc. Almost everyone who asks to be “linked to the SOEST page” will find a home here or on the Resource page (see below).

Resources Page

Like the page says: “[These] resources provide material and informational support to SOEST faculty, researchers, students, and staff. Several of these also provide information and educational services to scientists and educators outside of SOEST, as well as to the general public.” (You probably got here from there.)

As a rule, to be linked from this page you should provide support to a reasonably wide segment of SOEST (someone who works for just one researcher, or one institute, would be linked from their page), and perhaps even to researchers and / or educators at other institutions. Some of the listings might be “Outreach” if they didn’t target the scientific community.

Outreach Page

Pages linked from this page are directed toward the general public, although they are of course also of interest and use to the scientific community at SOEST and elsewhere. To call attention to an event or program appropriate for this page, please contact the Outreach Specialist.

The School Page

This is one of the few “destination” pages among these top-level pages, and one of the least likely to have material added to it that does not come directly from the four or five people already listed. It is for information from and about the school itself: its history, administration and structure, and location.
